I have finally written a piece of writing so controversial, so visionary, so downright offensive that no media institution in the Bay Area will publish it. And thus, the time has finally come for me to join the ranks of intellectual leaders like rap group De La Soul, various Scotts, and a hodgepodge of fascists: I am starting a Substack.
My primary mission with this publication will be to explore the housing movement in California and beyond. Many writers talk about housing policy, many other writers talk about politics, but few are as deeply embedded in the actual organizing of California’s housing movement as I am. Housing advocates have an optimistic vision for the future: beautiful, sustainable, affordable cities. The revival of American mobility and opportunity. I changed the trajectory of my life to be a part of realizing that vision (a story for another post). Amazing things are happening.
I hope to help outsiders understand why the hell we’re all going to so many city council meetings, what we intend to accomplish, how they can get involved. I hope to help insiders build consensus, or at least better understand each other. And I hope to bring everyone some clarity about the often-convoluted web of organizations and individuals that make up the housing movement. Throughout, I want this Substack to support community building among people who care about making cities better.
No AI here, just authentic human engagement.
The current Substack title, “Jeremy’s Quarterly,” perfectly captures my mission. Though I plan to publish twice a month, at least to start: one grand piece about the housing movement, one thought piece on policy or politics or musings on mushrooms or music or other things I care about. I also intend to have occasional guest posts from collaborators seeking to tap into my legions of fans, so I myself may not always be the writer. It is an unimpeachably descriptive title with a stellar acronym, “JQ.”
Another decision that makes perfect sense: The first piece I plan to publish, “Guide to the Bay Area YIMBY Movement,” shall not be the piece that inspired me to start this publication. The piece no newspaper was willing to publish is in fact so controversial and needlessly toxic that I have written it by hand on paper, put the paper in a jar, buried that jar in a hole, and will leave the ideas to ferment for a while before digging them up and attempting to publish them. I’m not even going to tell you the title. When you see it, you’ll know it.
For now, please subscribe. Share with your friends. Prepare yourself physically and emotionally for my first real piece, which will come out a week from today. I’m thrilled to have you along for this journey.
Love,
Jeremy
